Inlays vs. Onlays - What Is the Difference?
An inlay fits within the cusps of the tooth’s chewing surface, restoring the interior of the biting area. An onlay extends over one or more of the cusps and covers a larger portion of the tooth. Both are fabricated from porcelain or composite material and bonded in place for a precise, tight fit. They are custom-made for each patient and matched to the surrounding tooth color so the restoration blends naturally.
