How Composite Fillings Work
After thoroughly numbing the area, Dr. Velkovski removes the decayed portion of the tooth and cleans the cavity. Composite resin is applied in layers, each hardened with a curing light, then shaped and polished to match the surrounding tooth surface. The material bonds directly to the tooth structure, creating a tight seal that requires less removal of healthy enamel than older amalgam-based fillings. Most procedures are completed in a single appointment.
Tooth-Colored vs. Silver Amalgam
Composite resin fillings offer several advantages over traditional silver amalgam. They require less drilling because they bond to the tooth rather than relying on mechanical retention. They are free of mercury, which many patients prefer. They are invisible in the mouth – important for fillings placed in visible areas of the smile.
