How to Brush Your Teeth Properly | Twin Oaks Dental Studio

Brushing twice a day is the most basic part of at-home oral care – but the way you brush matters as much as how often you do it. At Twin Oaks Dental Studio, Dr. Velkovski coaches patients on technique that actually protects enamel and keeps gums healthy between visits.

The Right Way to Brush

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and use short, gentle circular strokes – not a back-and-forth scrubbing motion. Cover all surfaces of every tooth: the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces. Do not forget your tongue. Brush for a full two minutes, morning and before bed. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles are visibly frayed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Brushing harder does not mean cleaning more effectively. Aggressive pressure wears down enamel and irritates the gum line over time – a condition called toothbrush abrasion. If your bristles flatten within the first few weeks of use, you are likely pressing too hard. Electric toothbrushes are a strong option for patients who find technique difficult to maintain or who have limited hand mobility. Ask Dr. Velkovski which brush type he recommends for your specific situation.
