Dental Abscess Treatment

A dental abscess is a bacterial infection that has formed a pocket of pus at or around a tooth root. It is painful, it will not resolve on its own, and it is a dental emergency. At Twin Oaks Dental Studio in West Bloomfield, Dr. Velkovski treats dental abscesses the same day whenever possible.

Types of Dental Abscess and Treatment

A periapical abscess forms at the tip of the tooth root due to pulp infection – typically treated with root canal therapy to remove the infected tissue and eliminate the source. A periodontal abscess forms in the gum tissue due to trapped bacteria in a deep pocket – treated by draining the infection and thoroughly cleaning the affected area. In both cases, antibiotics may be prescribed when swelling is significant or infection appears to be spreading beyond the immediate site.

Warning Signs to Act On Immediately

The hallmarks of a dental abscess include throbbing tooth or jaw pain that does not ease, swelling in the cheek or jaw, sensitivity to pressure and temperature that lingers after the stimulus is removed, fever, and a visible pimple-like bump on the gum tissue near the affected tooth. If you experience facial swelling accompanied by difficulty swallowing or breathing, that is a medical emergency – go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
