How to Floss Correctly

Your toothbrush cleans the surfaces of your teeth – but not the spaces between them, where nearly 40% of each tooth’s surface area lives. At Twin Oaks Dental Studio, Dr. Velkovski recommends daily flossing for every patient and is happy to show you exactly how to do it effectively.

How to Floss Step by Step

Use about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around your middle fingers, leaving an inch or two to work with. Slide the floss gently between teeth using a zig-zag motion – do not snap it into the gum tissue. Curve it around each tooth in a C-shape and guide it under the gum line. Use a clean section as you move from tooth to tooth. Floss at least once a day, ideally at night before brushing.

If Traditional Floss Is Difficult

Floss picks, interdental brushes, and water flossers are all acceptable alternatives to traditional floss. They are especially useful for patients with braces, bridges, implants, or limited dexterity. A water flosser used properly can be as effective as string floss for cleaning between teeth and along the gum line. The most important thing is that you are consistently cleaning between your teeth in some form. Our hygiene team can walk you through the options at your next visit.
