What Periodontal Maintenance Involves
A periodontal maintenance appointment is more thorough than a standard cleaning. Our hygiene team removes plaque and tartar buildup above and below the gum line, measures pocket depths to track any changes since your last visit, and flushes debris from the pockets between your teeth and gums. Dr. Velkovski evaluates the tissue at each visit and adjusts your care plan if he sees any areas of concern developing. The goal is to stay ahead of the disease rather than respond to it after damage has occurred.
Why Three Months - Not Six
Gum disease is a chronic condition. Even after successful treatment, the specific bacteria responsible for it are still present in your mouth. Research shows that in patients with a history of gum disease, harmful bacterial levels rebuild to clinically dangerous thresholds in as little as 90 days. A six-month interval leaves too large a window for the disease to reestablish. Three to four month visits are clinically validated as the appropriate interval for long-term disease management.
