Periodontics in Bloomfield, MI
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults – and it progresses quietly in most people until it has already caused real damage. At Twin Oaks Dental Studio in West Bloomfield, Dr. Velkovski screens for gum disease at every exam and treats it at every stage without sending you to an outside office.
What Is Periodontics?
Periodontics is the area of dentistry focused on the health of the gums and bone that support your teeth. At Twin Oaks Dental Studio, periodontal care includes deep cleaning procedures like scaling and root planing, ultrasonic cleaning for heavy buildup, and ongoing maintenance appointments for patients managing gum disease long-term. All of it is handled in-house by Dr. Velkovski.
Why Gum Health Matters
Healthy gums are the foundation your teeth sit in. When gum disease is left untreated, the bacteria responsible for it attack the bone and connective tissue that hold your teeth in place. The result is bone loss that cannot be fully reversed. Treating gum disease early – and maintaining that treatment consistently – is the only way to stop the progression and preserve what you have.
Our Periodontal Services
Scaling and Root Planing
A deep cleaning procedure that removes bacterial deposits from below the gum line and smooths root surfaces so gum tissue can reattach and heal.
Periodontal Maintenance
Three to four month maintenance appointments for patients who have completed gum disease treatment - the ongoing care that keeps it from returning.
Ultrasonic Cleaning
High-frequency vibration combined with water irrigation to break apart and flush away hardened deposits, especially effective for heavy buildup and deep pockets.

Periodontics FAQ's
How do I know if I have gum disease?
Common signs include bleeding gums when you brush or floss, persistent bad breath, gums that appear red or swollen, and teeth that feel loose or have shifted. However, many patients have gum disease with no noticeable symptoms – which is why screening at every exam is important.
Is scaling and root planing painful?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so the treatment itself should not be painful. Some tenderness and gum sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and typically managed well with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Why do I need appointments every three months instead of every six?
After active gum disease treatment, the bacteria responsible repopulate to dangerous levels faster than they do in healthy gum tissue. Three to four month intervals keep bacterial levels in check before new damage can begin to develop.
Can gum disease be reversed?
In its earliest stage – gingivitis – gum disease can be reversed with professional cleaning and improved home care. Once it has advanced to periodontitis and bone loss has occurred, the disease can be managed and stopped but the bone loss cannot be fully restored.
Does insurance cover periodontal treatment?
Most PPO plans provide some coverage for periodontal treatment, including scaling and root planing. Coverage percentages vary by plan. Our team verifies your benefits before your appointment and will give you a clear picture of your expected costs.
