How Sealants Work
A sealant is a thin protective coating painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and hardened in place with a curing light. The entire process takes just a few minutes per tooth and causes no discomfort – no drilling, no anesthesia required. Once in place, the sealant acts as a physical barrier against the bacteria and acids that cause cavities in those deep, hard-to-clean grooves.
Who Benefits from Sealants
Sealants are typically applied as soon as the permanent molars come in – usually around ages six and twelve – when cavity risk in the back teeth is highest. Adults with cavity-prone back teeth can also benefit. Sealants can last several years with proper care and are significantly more cost-effective than treating a cavity that develops without protection. Dr. Velkovski will advise whether they are appropriate during your next exam.
